The “Laboratoire Génie des Procédés Papetiers (LGP2)” of the “École Française de Papeterie et des Industries Graphiques” (EFPG) and the “Centre Technique du Papier” (CTP) organize a workshop seminar on September 8th & 9th, 2005, entitled “Fibre Functionalisation Workshop”. (Programme)

More information...The main goal of the surface treatments of cellulose fibres is to provide them intelligent functions, such as way that they become : hydrophobic, which protect them from water uptake and release ; to make them reactive towards polymeric matrices in order to elaborate high performance composites materials ; to graft at their surface specific sensors to render them photoluminescents, electrically conductive materials, etc.
Several domains of applications could be envisaged, namely:
| cellulose-based composite materials for automotive and packaging; | |||
| bio–degradable materials and intelligent packaging; | |||
| materials traceability; | |||
| conductive papers for electronic and optoelectronic applications, etc. |
Ten years of scientific experiment within the LGP2
This research activity is carried out since 10 years within the LGP2. It was initiated in the Gandini’s research group, after a post-doc training of one of its researchers (Naceur Belgacem) at the Polytechnic School of Montreal in Canada. The surface functionalisation of cellulose fibres can be achieved by various surface treatments, such as:
| Purely physical treatments, like solvent extractions; | |||
| physico-chemical treatment and particularly corona treatment; | |||
| Chemical treatments. They are calling upon the use of three different approaches, namely: 1. Chemical grafting by direct condensation, including surface compatibilisation with hydrophobic moieties. 2. The use of bi-functional molecules capable of reacting with the OH groups of the cellulose surface and leaving the second functions available for further exploitation or such as copolymerisation with the matrix grafting of biocide molecules. 3. The condensation of organo-metallic-compounds, followed by their coupling with suitable reactive molecules or macromolecules, in view of hydrophobization of the surface and/or its copolymerisation with the matrix. |
A research activity reinforced, in relation with current industrial attempts
This activity was recently reinforced by hiring Alain Dufresne, a new professor who is specialized in the field of nano-particles of cellulose (whiskers), chitin and starch. Since the beginning of this research activity within LGP2, about forty publications and communications have appeared (following bibliographical list).
The "Laboratoire Génie des Procédés Papetiers", with a close collaboration with CTP, becomes a key partner in the mounting projects within this field of research, as witnesses its active participation the integrated European project “SustainPack” or international pole of competitiveness “Minalogic”.
